Someone put a dog on Bitcoin. Nobody noticed for a decade.

May 09, 2014. Bitcoin is trading around $440. Dogecoin is five months old. And somewhere, an anonymous user builds a transaction with nine words tucked inside it and broadcasts it to the network.

It confirms in block 299,825, carrying a permanent OP_RETURN message: "Buddy is the best dog in the world." From that moment on, buddy is part of Bitcoin. Every full node on earth carries him. He can't be edited, deleted, rugged, or migrated. He just sits there — the first dog ever recorded on the blockchain.

And not just the first dog. Bitcat, the famous "first cat on chain," didn't show up until block 322,917 on September 28, 2014. That's 142 days later — 23,092 blocks of the dog sitting on chain alone. Before the cat. Before any of them. The first documented animal on the blockchain is a dog. His name is buddy.

The cat coin ran first. Fine. The chain doesn't care about narratives — it cares about block heights. Lower number wins. Buddy's number is lower. Forever.

The inscription is nine words. The story behind it starts more than a year earlier, on the biggest Bitcoin forum of the era, and every piece of it is still public. Here's the timeline the community dug up.

March 26, 2013Buddy enters Bitcoin history

Months before Dogecoin existed, a Bitcointalk user named icicle was publicly fighting to save a real dog named Buddy. Her forum signature read "Help me save Buddy!" It's the earliest documented Bitcoin-era reference to Buddy anyone has found. He wasn't a meme. He was already part of Bitcoin's history.

October 25, 2013Buddy gets his own thread

A few months later an entire thread was dedicated to him: "Buddy wants his Bitcoins." The story: 52 BTC stuck on the Intersango exchange, and an owner hoping to use them to rescue a sick shelter dog who needed heart surgery.

A transaction mined in block 299,825 permanently records: "Buddy is the best dog in the world." And here's the part that's hard to ignore: the Bitcointalk thread was still receiving replies on May 8 and 9, 2014 — the exact window the inscription was mined. The forum story and the on-chain message intersect at the same moment in Bitcoin history.

The wallet trailNot spam. A message.

Tracing the wallet behind the inscription — its funding history, public key, and spending history — turned up something else: the same chain of funds later published another personal message on-chain. These weren't random spam transactions. Someone was intentionally leaving personal messages inside Bitcoin.

The public record never reveals whether Buddy got the heart surgery he needed. That's what makes the inscription read less like an experiment and more like a tribute. Icicle's (Alexandra's) original plea is still preserved, and the nine words are still in block 299,825, where they'll stay as long as Bitcoin exists.
